Our Approach
Helping people build lives, not simply receive support.
At H.U.G.E. TODAY, our approach is built around a simple belief:
Every person deserves the opportunity to live a meaningful life.
Support should not define a person.
A diagnosis should not define a person.
A person's past should not define what is possible for their future.
We focus on the individual — their strengths, interests, relationships,
goals and aspirations.
Purpose Matters
We believe everyone has something that gives their life purpose.
Sometimes that purpose can be difficult to identify, particularly
when someone has experienced long periods of isolation, instability
or limited opportunities.
We work with participants to explore what creates enjoyment, motivation,
connection and a sense of achievement.
This might involve discovering a new interest, developing a routine,
reconnecting with the community, finding employment or simply
building confidence through small successes.
Purpose can start with something very small.
We Do With, Not For
One of the foundations of our approach is supporting people to
participate rather than automatically doing things for them.
-
If someone can do something themselves, we want to create opportunities for them to do it.
-
If they need assistance, we provide the appropriate support.
-
If they are learning a new skill, we allow time for practice.
-
And when someone succeeds, we recognise that achievement.
This approach helps maintain existing skills while creating opportunities to develop new ones.
Strengths-Based Support
We don't want our understanding of someone to be defined by what they cannot do.
We look at:
-
What they can do
-
What they enjoy
-
What they are interested in
-
What motivates them
-
What they are good at
-
What they want to learn
-
What support helps them succeed
From these strengths, we can build meaningful goals and
practical opportunities.
Progress Looks Different for Everyone
Progress isn't always a major milestone.
-
Sometimes progress looks like preparing a meal independently.
-
Sometimes it is getting up on time.
-
Trying something new.
-
Going somewhere for the first time.
-
Managing a difficult situation differently.
-
Building a positive relationship.
-
Taking responsibility for something around the home.
-
Or simply believing, "I can do this."
We recognise these moments because they are often the building blocks of
greater independence.
Support Should Adapt
-
People change.
-
Their interests change.
-
Their abilities change.
-
Their circumstances change.
-
Their support needs can change too.
-
-
-
-
Our approach therefore includes ongoing observation, communication, documentation and review.
We work collaboratively with participants and their support networks to identify what is working, where challenges are occurring and whether adjustments may be required.
A Meaningful Life
We believe a meaningful life includes more than accommodation and support.
It includes:
-
Connection.
-
Relationships and belonging.
-
-
Purpose.
-
Having something meaningful to work towards.
-
-
Choice.
-
Being involved in decisions about your own life.
-
-
Growth.
-
Learning and developing new skills.
-
-
Contribution.
-
Having opportunities to participate and contribute.
-
-
Enjoyment.
-
Doing things that make life enjoyable.
-
-
Success.
-
Experiencing achievement, no matter how small.
